Professionalism and Ethics

Professionalism and Ethics

We believe in fairness and ethical business — promoting integrity across engineering and technology.

At ICAEIC, professionalism and ethics define the standard of our community. We believe that excellence in engineering, innovation, and computing must always be supported by integrity, responsibility, competence, and respect for society. Technical capability alone is not enough. True professional distinction is reflected in how knowledge is applied, how decisions are made, and how responsibilities are upheld.

As a professional society, ICAEIC promotes ethical conduct in research, engineering practice, academic engagement, innovation, institutional collaboration, and public-facing technical work. We expect our members to maintain high standards of honesty, accountability, fairness, and professional discipline in everything they do.

Rules of Conduct

To ensure that all our members are clear on our values and expectations, we ask all members to sign up to our Rules of Conduct. These set out the standards of behaviour expected of ICAEIC members and form the foundation of our professional community.

  • Strengthen public trust in engineering and computing through responsible behaviour

What We Expect from Members

All ICAEIC members are expected to act in a way that reflects the dignity and seriousness of a respected professional society.

Members should demonstrate not only technical expertise, but also ethical maturity and sound professional judgement.

  • Act truthfully in qualifications, affiliations, research, authorship, and professional claims
  • Undertake only work that matches their competence, training, and responsibility
  • Maintain confidentiality, fairness, and respect in professional and academic settings
  • Consider the wider impact of technical decisions on people, systems, and society

  • Continue professional development to remain current, capable, and responsible in practice

Our Core Ethical Principles

The ethical foundation of ICAEIC is built on a small number of strong principles that guide all professional conduct.

  • Integrity — act honestly and consistently in all professional matters
  • Public Responsibility — place safety, wellbeing, and public interest at the centre of technical work
  • Competence — maintain high standards of knowledge, skill, and professional judgement
  • Respect — treat colleagues, institutions, collaborators, and communities with fairness and dignity
  • Responsibility — recognise the social, academic, environmental, and professional consequences of technical decisions
  • Sustainability — support engineering and computing practices that contribute to long-term societal benefit

Why It Matters

Engineering and computing now influence infrastructure, automation, artificial intelligence, communication, research systems, education, healthcare, data environments, and public life. Because of this, ethical conduct is not simply a formal requirement. It is a professional necessity. ICAEIC believes that responsible innovation creates stronger institutions, better research, more trusted systems, and more meaningful impact.
